HAPPY OCTOBER EVERYONE! October is a beautiful month. Sally, the font colors you chose were perfect; the exact colors of the trees up here in Northern Wisconsin. We are visiting my sister and 2 brothers up here in the Wausau area. Yesterday we drove further North to their lake place and the beauty brought tears to my eyes. We are blessed.

Middle name is not that popular in Europe as is in the States. If He would have one, I am sure would have an initial, especially, when He signs things. I think He has none. At least that is my observation, from Europe. Kati

I am amazed at what I learn here on this blog.  From Opera to Singers, Authors to Countries.  And now this.

Kati I have known people with just an initial for a middle name, but I never understood why, what or where.  It is a cultural thing!  Thanks for letting us know.  (and especially me, who had no clue).

If there is an initial, that is usually a second name, I do have one, but it is not automatic. Maybe these days, when parents would like to have some unique names, cannot agree on it, so they are using both. Kati

Happy October Everyone. What a beautiful time of year. God paints with a wonderful wide brush to bring happiness to all. It is my favorite time of year also. So many people say they don't like it because they think about winter coming on. To all those people, take a walk, absorb all the color and the smells of Autumn. Just can't be beat!! Carol

no kati, I wish I could write poetry, but I can only enjoy it. This one we learned in school, many years ago.I kept it, memorized it at one time. Here are the other two verses
        "The Chestnuts came in yellow,
        The Oaks in crimson dressed;
        The lovely Misses Maple
        In scarlet looked their best;
        All balanced to their partners,
        And gaily fluttered by;
The sight was like a rainbow
        New fallen from the sky.

        Then, in the rustic hollow,
        At hide-and-seek they played,
        The party closed at sundown,
        And everybody stayed.
        Professor Wind played louder;
        They flew along the ground;
        And then the party ended
In jolly "hands around." Geo Cooper,1838-1927

The leaves will soon be turning here in Pa. and everywhere you go you see thousands of pumpkins in the fields. That is a nice thought from Carol to enjoy the colors and smells of Autumn and not dwell on winter coming on. Of course it helps to leave for Florida before the snows. Last year we could not do that and I missed the beautiful Florida winter. But we must enjoy wherever we are at the moment. Take care and love to all. Jeanine

I received my Mario Lanza CDs and found them to be just what I was looking for. Sure brought back a lot of memories. It is divided into 3 CDs.
The last one was of arias from different operas, but, of course, my favorite was the first one with songs from waaaaaay back.

I'm still waiting for my Vienna DVD. I get more anxious every time I read a new response about it. I hope it comes before my trip to St.Paul, as I would love to take it along to view with my family there. Thanks to all for your many comments. I have learned a lot! Love to all and please enjoy this beautiful time of year, Carol

I have a question for Sally. This is a photo ID. On the photo gallery page under the pics from Iris Schilling in Vienna, there is a picture of two ladies with Carmen. Carmen is wearing her gold gown and the ladies are both in aqua green and white. I recognize the lady on the left from the Dublin DVD (she had her arm in a sling). The lady on the right--I have seen her at many of the concerts Dublin, Royal Albert Hall, Maastricht, and a few others. We have always wondered if these people were just VERY devoted fans or maybe they had family in the orchestra. Just very curious as to who these lovely people are.

    Thanks as always.

Two or three weeks ago I saw some comments in the Guest book about the Bond Quartet.
I decided to do a little research about them.
Biography of the Bond String Quartet.
They all have impeccable music pedigrees. They are in the age of 23 till 26 years old.

Each member spent years of training. They are all graduated from the Royal Collage of Music or similar studies. Their background is Classical music, but in their CD and DVD albums you will find a collection of various types of music pieces.
Bond defines it as a musical realm of its own.
In my opinion even "Victory" is a kind of classical music.
It features also arrangements of Tchaikovsky and Saint-Saëns.
A purist will not define this album as a classical, but as Bond music.
They have numerous engagements including a concert at the Royal Albert Hall.
But also in Italy, Panama, and NY USA. In Japan they have even a Japanese Fan site.

To present the names of the Bond members I refer to the hair color of the moment they play with André.

Dark hair Halie Ecker (first violin) from Perth Australia.
Blond curly hair Eos Chater (second violin) from Cardiff Wales Blond
strait hair Tania Davis (viola) from Sydney Australia
Brown hair Gay-Yee Westerhoff (Cello)from Hull England
Bond is an Anglo-Australian group as you can see.

Their violins look a little strange, because of they are electrical instruments and normally they have to be connected with a wire. I did not see these wires, but it could be wireless. All JSO microphones are wireless.
No doubt you can hear their instruments clearly.

To play with André is a pleasure for them, because he is so funny and this is visible on their faces. I never saw them laughing as loud as in this presentation.
André’s blue eyes with his handsome appearance had no problem to play in harmony with them, despite the difference in age with the Bond girls.
They move with grace and elegance.
And most of all they play music.
Many woman Fans like them too.

What they wear is nothing more or less than what you see at an average gala reception.
Only a few persons don’t like them, a pity.
You can see more of the Bond string quartet at www.youtube.com.
The resolution here is not so good, but you can get an impression of their performance.
Here on youtube you can find many of your favorite artists including Andre Rieu.

I like to have the CD's for the car and the DVD when I can look at our handsome Andre and see the beautiful scenery.
Right now I am outbid with less than 4 hours to go but I will wait until the last minute and go in and hopefully get it. There are 11 bids so someone (besides me) really wants it. I have been waiting since August for my order of the Stradivari body lotion and Limited Edition photo and I contacted Andre's site yesterday and they told me the order was held up with U.S. Customs because of all the terrorism in Sept. Can you believe it?? Guess they thought the lotion could be an explosive!! Guess I should get it any day now. Take care my friends and welcome Prudence.

I have a funny Stradivari Lotion story...  My coworker Tarek came to my desk and while we were talking (no doubt about Dedicated Servers or T3s or OC12s and such) he took my Stradivairi and used it for hand lotion.  Just then, his boss arrives and calls him to a meeting in the boss' office.  When Tarek entered the office, his boss looked at him and (sniff sniff) said.. "Ummm, Tarek..is that really you?"

As for BOND? I can pass. Don't need to see silicone and too short of skirts. Just not my idea of a good 'show'. (yet, I know others like them, and that's fine too.)

Red Skelton's Pledge of Allegiance was made famous via the Internet.  God Bless him for his Patriotism!

In 1969, comic Red Skelton lamented on his weekly television show that the Pledge of Allegiance might someday be considered a "prayer" and eliminated from public schools.

          The Pledge of Allegiance:

I: Me, an individual, a committee of one.

PLEDGE: Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self pity.

ALLEGIANCE: My love and my devotion.

TO THE FLAG: Our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there's respect because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody's job.

UNITED: That means that we have all come together.

STATES: Individual communities that have united into 48 great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose; all divided with imaginary boundaries yet united to a common purpose, and that's love for country.

AND TO THE REPUBLIC: A state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people, and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.

FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION: One nation, meaning "so blessed by God."

          INDIVISIBLE: Incapable of being divided.

WITH LIBERTY: Which is freedom, the right of power to live one's own life without threats, fear, or some sort of retaliation.

AND JUSTICE: The principle or quality of dealing fairly with others.

FOR ALL: For all, which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine.

And now, boys and girls, let me hear you recite the Pledge of Allegiance:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country, and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance: "under God." Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said that is a prayer, and that would be eliminated from schools too?

My children are both over 40 but they used to watch Red Skeleton when they were small & literally roll on the flor with laghter at his antica jokes etc. It was one of the few programs that the kids could watch. Some cdn t,v was just too raw for children &
to-days' t.v. has much that isn't fit for adults let alone the children. Don't watch a lot of commercial t.v. for me it's either history, discover or national geographic or my music channel. I do like lost & grey's anatomy but the rest of sit-coms leave
me cold. We sure are a varied group of people & it is so nice to have a forum where we can compare notes. A good day to all & remember to vote for Andre at

      1. All Creatures Great & Small (plus I have the specials)  from the books of James Harriet  England

      2. Road To Avonlea  from the writing of Lucy Maud Montgomery. Canada

      3. BallyKissAngel  BBC Ireland

      4.  MONK   (ok, heaven help me, I think it's funny)

      OLD MOVIES>LOVE THEM

I like other shows on television, but don't have a collection of them.  Mostly I watch The History or Discovery Channel but more times than not, the tv is off, Andre Rieu is on the DVD or I am enjoying this marvelous invention of God's called Silence.

Here i am watching the most spectacular columbus day parade ever...from New York City, being wowed from floats from La Scala and from Bologna, Bologna had a swimmer/gymnyst floating in a large transparant cup...doing ballet moves to incredible opera music....and La Scala had these amazing dancers in a baroque dress that had a skirt and bodice that must have been 15 feet high...the girls i guess then stood on a platform and the girls themselves from the waist up came out of the bodice....so it looked as though they were really wearing these amazing gigantic dresses, they had baroque wigs on but their own hair flowing under the wigs...the wigs were like hats atop their heads..they performed beautiful dance movements to opera arias...leave it to La Scala...
then there were tenors...excellent ...one sang return to soriento...oh my garsh....but then the piece de resistance was after an Italian Singer (giatta someone or other) sang, they announced that she would soon star in a broadway play about the life of: MARIO LANZA!!!!!...i'm speechless...oh my garsh...i will find out when this happens...and who knows...maybe some of you guys would like to see it (it would be great if it lined up with a New York Andre concert)...we shall see...

dear lorraine & sally, You can find Miriam Makeba on a Google page with complete history etc, plus there is some downloads as well. Another place I went I found a whole lot of instrumental music which I really enjoy especially if I'm into the accounting. Nice background without the
crashing noise of a lot of to-days music. Another oldie but goodie was
Vaughn Monroe (Riders in the sky) &
andy williams (moon river). It seems that the pendulum is beginning to swing back to the balladeir which is kind of a good thing. Maybe our young people can realize that music does not have to be full of sound & fury. A bit
of peacefulness just might ease tensions so folks get all angry & bent out of shape. Even color has an effect on people. Years ago I had a fire in my house so when the restoration was done the painter painted my bedroom hot pink, & that just made me so angry they had to repaint it a soft pastel pink. I like pink but not hot pink, even in clothing a little goes a long way. Happy October everyone. Bald old prairies !! It's beginning to get chillyu especially when the wind howls

Hi to all you great ladies and andre rieu fans. You know i just happened to see one of the movies mentioned. it was "stage door canteen" marvellous entertainment by a lot of artists. also a genuine ww2 love story.
I believe the most romantic movie scene ever was "sound of music" where maria and the captain are singing to each other in the cabana by the lake in the moonlight.
I guess i am a movie buff but also a great fan of andre rieu. By the way, did carmen ever marry her boyfriend for whom she left andre's orchestra?

Hi everyone, Oh girls, you are counting days until you see Andre!! How wonderful. I am so happy for you. Tell us all about it. I am still counting MONTHS - seems like an eternity. I am still trying to get a confirming for Fort Myers, Fl for April 22, that way I can at least get two concerts in two days. Don't know if I can handle it (haha) but I will try!! I get butterflies just thinking about it. My poor husband, he knows how I get when the time comes. I cannot eat or sleep - I get so excited. Haven't received the tickets for Miami as yet so I don't know where we will be but they have a great interactive seating chart that shows you exactly what you will see on the stage from your seat so I am really nervous about that too! I hope there will be no need for field glasses!!
Guess my Strad. lotion and photo were lost somewhere in U.S.Customs. They are sending another order registered, priority mail. Next week we leave for Florida to look for a house so it will probably arrive during that time. Luckily I have a sister here who will take care of my mail. Must go get a little work done - notice I said Little - must watch Andre for a while. Take care my friends. Love from Jeanine

Hi everyone, I'm not sure who wrote the article on the "Harlem Gospel Singers", it wasn't signed, but it was quite interesting.
I do enjoy the songs that they sang, my favorite I believe is "I Will Follow Him". It seems that they do a lot of charity work and work for children and causes. It tend to admire anyone who does works for charities and causes.

I have heard the few clips of their music on Andre's site...it's different than what we are used to hearing on his site of course, or anywhere else when it comes to Andre's concerts or performances.

I don't know if Andre is going to have them at any more of his concerts, and although I do like all of the songs they sang, I tend to be more of the "classical" soft-sounds-of-music person. I do respect them for their 20 years of hard work.

Quite the snowfall in N.Y state!! we've had a skiff & it's cool here. Lot's of windy but when it doesn't blow it's pretty nice. Am waiting for the Vienna
DVD & ordered the N.Y. CD & hope that the N.Y. DVD will be available sometime
soon. Introduced Andre's music to a pal of mine. He'd never heard of Andre & he was impressed. He'll be telling his Mom as she lives in the Vancouver area & his concert is there Oct 23rd at
G.M place which is a huge venue. Haven't been inside but people from all over the province of B.C. take the trip. Sure hope the weather is good for the bussing of the Orchestra &
support staff as they have to cross the Rockies to get to Calgary for Oct 25th. Once this side of the mountains
it's all flat land and downhill to Ontario when you get more mountains,
except for the river valleys. I've driven all over the U.S. From Wash state south to san diego, then east across the Southwest to St Petersburg,
Fl, & then north to Virginia Beach &
then to Richmond VA. Pittsburgh. then
west across the Dakotas Idaho North to Alberta & home to Kelown B.C. 12,500
miles. two & one half month. Quite a marvelous trip. Am ready for another
jaunt to catch all the places I missed before. Would like to go east & then south. When I win a lottery!! Also do the European tour go to Maastricht
then Tuscany where my grandmothers peaple originated. I have a painting of the spot where Teun plays the flute while perched on a hay roll Mine shows the monastery atop the hill. It is so nice to be able to trace one's roots & learn what your forbears accomplished. My paternal ancestor came from a village near Amsterdam in 1643. Settled in what is now Albany N.Y. One
time N.Y. state was New Holland & the city was New Amsterdam. Dont exactly know when it became part of the U.S. but it had to do with some treaty that settled one of the wars in Europe. It's pure history on a personal level
    which makesa it really interesting.

not bad enough to have surgery. It seems that these things happen when you use you hands in any kind of repetitive work. Hadn't heard of Freddie Fender passing it seems that we take for granted our favorite artists, not realizing that they too are mortal, but at least we have their body of work to enjoy until you wear out the cassettes. Had that occur with a Nana Mouskiri & Eagles tape. Much of my music has come from Reader's digest

Lorraine, what a wonderful story. I enjoyed it very much! I smiled all the way through your story. I remember Andre talking of the Limburger cheese, I believe it was "La Vie Est Belle", but not quite sure, that he told of the cheese. I thought it was funny too.

I remember my father talking of Limburger cheese when I was a child, he said it was incredibly good, however, it did "stink", haha, and because of what he said, I have never tried it, not once. But, I am going to actually get some and try it, now that you told such a nice story, and also said there was a milder version Limburger cheese. Take care everyone, and have a nice day or night, whichever it may be!

Then I saw what you meant about Limburg and Andre.I like the "picture book"sandwiches, never heard that before. As for your limbuger cheese, yikes!, not sure I could go for that, even the milder version.Had a German bro-in-law,who loved that cheese. He could empty a room faster than anyone! And lorraine, nothing "silly" about memories.Thank you so much for sharing that one.

      Lorraine,

That is a wonderful look back and memory of your father.  A moment in time, still live in your mind and heart.  It is the simple things that mean the most, the making of buchenbilder, time spent together.

Sometimes I think of long ago, and my father.  I can 'see' him as he plays the piano or guitar, singing, laughing having a good time.  I recall the duets we would play.  My father loved to play cribbage, and most of all he loved to have me play as his partner, against his friends.  I was but 7 and we could win most matches. I used to think we had fun playing and winning, but now as an adult, I know what I enjoyed the most was seeing how proud my father was of me, how he looked for ways to spend time with me.

I wonder when my kids are older what they will look back upon.  What memories will they treasure?

Sally, sounds like some really fond memories of your father. It seems the perfect scenario for a growing child. And it's these types of moments with our parents that makes a child grow up with wonderful goals and ideas in their minds to make the world a better place to live for everyone. These moments make a lot of difference in how a child "settles in" to adulthood.

So many today don't have that, and it's so sad. We wonder what it's going to be like a few years from now when these children "grow up" and have to go it alone.

My father was anything but musical, but he was a very good father, we, as a family always did everything together and went places and saw a lot, even if it was just in the state (California). We were always together, and he protected us and kept us fed.

We used to play pinochle a lot, we had no tv for a very long time. We used to play partners when my brother was home, and when he wasn't we played singles. Dad used to out-bid my mom and I all the time...he took those chances he won a lot, but we won a lot too! Anyway, it was a very fun time and it was just the three (or four)of us, and it's all we needed to be together.

One of the reason's that I didn't care for school much, was because of my family, I just wanted to be home with them. I was very happy there.

School...well, I wished that I had learned more...but I did good. I just wanted to be home.
        1. October 18, 2006 Marlene Warren wrote:
Oh, just wanted to add, that we did more than just play pinochle...haha...that was just one moment in our life! Thanks for listening!

LOL  I didn't think that was all you did.

Isn't it great to have good memories?  I also like people who choose to keep the good and not dwell on the bad.  It's something Andre Fans have in common (except for the few odd balls).

Hi Everyone, I really enjoyed the topic of the Limburger cheese. My dad also liked it, along with the Roquefort. I am of a French background, with a name like Beauvais, how could I be anything else? I was only 18 when my dad passed away, but do have some kind and funny remembrances. Right now I am on the other end of the spectrum, with 6 kids ranging in age from 35-50, it is a blast when they get together and remember fun times we had. I always say that I had PMS for aabout 15 years and a lot of the things they bring up I don't remember at first, until they all start talking and laughing. I wish we could get together more often. Last May, we had a family vacation in Charleston, SC and visited the ship my husband was on during the Korean War, which is on display at Patriot's Point. The grandkids really enjoyed seeing where he spent 4 years of his life. Lots of memories there.

By the way, am I the only one attending the concert in St.Paul, MN??
Surely there must be someone out there that will be attending, being we ordered our tickets last December and aare inthe 29th row!!! Anyway. all of you on the west coast. have a great time visiting and enjoying the concerts. Love to all, Carol

She waited a few days and then went to pick up the photos. But she was told that they weren't ready. She left and then returned a few days later. Again she was told that the photos weren't developed yet. She was so anxious to get the photographs that she started to cry. The store clerk wanted to console her, so he said, "Don't worry. Someday your prints will come."

    Hi everyone...
As Shirley just wrote, the order numbers for the signed New York Memories CDs have just been posted on Andre's site. And, like Shirley, my order was on the list. Second year in a row that I have gotten a signed CD. Last year I was the 100th number on the list, the very last one. This year my number was the 11th one on the list.

I'm so excited!! According to the most recent email from Andre's Boutique, the CDs shipped out October 20th.. Keep a close watch on those mailboxes..

Same with concert tickets, you gotta be fast ordering or you'll be sitting high up in the clouds with a pair of
binoculars! Andre is getting so much more popular here in the US now and his fan base keeps growing.
Wish he was gonna do Dallas again next year. Not only will I miss the fans and the dinner but the tree at
the motel where ALL the birds whistled at me! Such a thrill! Besides, I want to know why Howard hasn't made
"mayor of Grand Prairie" yet. or, maybe he has and I just haven't heard. Lawrence?

CONGRATS to Shirley and Lawrence! I was a day late and a few numbers short. Boy, am I ever having "concert" withdrawals!! Listening to all that have and will be attending concerts is making me a bit sad. You know I wrote a few weeks back to Andre's GB and told him how his faithful Dallas fans really miss him and that the new DVD and CD will have to hold us over. Well . . it never got posted! Oh well. Shirley, I have been busy . . just catching up on reading this site. Bill and I just "rowed" across Texas instead of "waltzing". We were visiting his Sis, Dot down in the Beaumont area. Flooding, indeed. They called out the Nat'l Guard. 5 lives were lost. Never saw such torrential rains in my 69 1/2 years. I laughed out loud at the Limburger cheese posts! My Dad really liked it and oh boy did we run when Mom brought it out! I had never heard of the milder "spread" version but will have to try it. Being a native "cheesehead", I bet I like it. When we were in Wisconsin recently for a wedding I sent differnt cheeses home to TX and my family and friends are enjoying it. Have you ever tasted cheese curds? Hhhhmm delish. Barb

Yes, I was afraid you all would be floating around for months down there!
Limburger...el yucko! I did try the milder spread Lorraine, but... guess I can't get past that taste, even the tiniest taste makes me shudder. Gave the rest to a family member who loves it. Cheese curds? YES, delicious.A friend, who orders vacuum packed ones, fixed some deep fried ones. boy were they good. She says fresh is best though. She had some at a fair up north once.I doubt if this is true, but said they feed the curds to rats up there, just to watch them drink beer and polka! I like to hear them squeek in my mouth(not the rats), almost as much fun as bubble gum used to be.
Well, enough of that. Marlene, are you "down" yet?

barb lorraine & everyone else that tunes into this forum. Oct 25th was a lovely concert in Calgary & all the orchestra had driven from Vancouver on the 24th after their concert in Van-
couver B.C. A very long drive thru the
Rockys which are already getting their winter coats of snow but the roads as yet are still okay. Edmonton is done & they are on their way to Winnipeg. We still have a chinook which is a sometimes normal weather phenomanon inthe area east of the mountain, altho
it doesn't reach into Manitoba so there
it will be chilly, Brrr. Met folks from Spokane & we shared a cab from the hotel to the saddledome, which is a
hockey rink for the Calgary Flames of the Ntnl Hockey League. Also have the Edmonton Oilers up north which is where
Wayne Gretzky played for years. To-day he is owner-mngr of the Phoenix Coyotes
so he has ties to both Canada & the U.S. Also met Carol from KSPS, Spokane,
the PBS sponsor of Andre's Cdn & U.S
concerts in the west. I don't know how far their territory goes & expect that closer to other large cities they
would have their own PBS stations
involved. All in all it was a most enjoyable evening. Got the best aerobic workout, with all the clapping,
toe-tapping & dancing humming & singing along with the JSO. Manoe is full of fun. & the anvil skit was
hilarious. He also brought the carillion along & Fred Steins played
his usual best. My seat mates were from
holland originally & least Mom was so
she quite enjoyed the performance. The newspaper write-up surely didn't reflect the enthusiasm of the crowd of between 7,000 to 10,000 people. Some time in the future, I will find out the attendance as the venue was a real crush & except for the areas adjacent
to the stage it looked like a lot more
than 7,000 people from all over southern Alberta, Wash. & Idaho & maybe
even Montana. It was a real gala evening for me & I hope he back next year so I can go again. Love Marianne

serenade & Be my love, which are mario lanza recording. Would like to get a rendition of the plantain tenors but
expect that is not something available
Will play them all yet this evening. My computer went down overnite so have played with it off & on all day. Finally shut the computer down completely and lo! it's back up working

      Pumpkin History:
References to pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." "Pepon" was nasalized by the French into "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion." Shakespeare referred to the "pumpion" in his Merry Wives of Windsor. American colonists changed "pumpion" into "pumpkin." The "pumpkin" is referred to in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater and Cinderella.
Native Americans dried strips of pumpkin and wove them into mats. They also roasted long strips of pumpkin on the open fire and ate them. The origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes.

Hi all, and thanks a million to those who blazed that trail in Portland and shared your photos and happening there. I often wonder where you all get the fantastic "factoids". Sally, if I ever come across a white pumpkin...it's toast! I agree that this is a lovely time of year and I wish everyone a very happy and healthy tomorrow. Many KUDOS to Sally for bringing us all the many good times we share at this site. Cheers,
